New Nurse Residency Program
Lawrence General Hospital is committed to providing a comprehensive New Nurse Residency Program to graduate nurses. This unique program is designed to provide all-encompassing clinical exposure in an acute care setting for registered nurses with one year of experience or less.
Applicants are hired into this program as full-time clinicians on a monthly basis.

Nurse Residency Program
- Coordinated by the Professional Development New Grad Program Coordinator, with support from unit-specific educators
- Designed to provide classroom, simulation, and clinical education aimed at assisting the new graduate nurse with transitioning from a student to a competent nurse, able to provide high quality, safe care to our patients
- Based on Patricia Benner’s novice to expert educational model
- The new nurse remains in the program for a 12-month period, working on professional growth through education, feedback, and reflection
- Involvement in the Preceptor Program
Curriculum includes:
- New Grad Council (provides additional learning opportunities and peer support)
- Generic Educator Day (concentrates on knowledge and skills needed by all new grads)
- Unit-specific classes (provides knowledge and skills needed to care for patients on specific units, for example: surgical, cardiac, and dialysis patients)
- Training class on placing IVs and skills needed to care for central lines
- Training class on caring for patients with wounds
- Trainings by Professional Development Specialists and other members of the Lawrence General family. Includes but is not limited to:
- Time Management; Prioritization; Communication Skills
- Critical Thinking
- Generational Differences; Elder Care
- How to handle being part of a medical emergency
- Spiritual Care by our hospital clergy
- Addiction with our Behavioral Health Addiction Specialist
- Abuse and Trauma-Informed Care
- Additional education sessions by specialists from our various departments including respiratory, behavioral health, laboratory/blood bank, social work, case management, and many others
- Trainings by outside resources - includes but is not limited to:
- Tissue Donation with staff from the New England Donor Services
- Palliative Care and Hospice with staff from Merrimack Valley Hospice
- Shadowing in various departments based on the new grad’s home unit. (For example: new nurse on a surgical unit will go to surgical services; new nurse from telemetry will go to the Cardiac Cath Lab)
Nurse Residency Program Application Information
- Designed for nurses with one year of experience or less
- Required to be a graduate from an accredited nursing program with an ADN or BSN
- Required to have a valid Massachusetts RN license at the start of the program
- Potential candidates are screened for hire each month
- New grads are hired primarily onto the Medical/Surgical and Telemetry units, with occasional opportunities in our specialty and critical care departments
