Residency Teaching Program

Developed in 1994 as the nation's first accredited Community Health Center-sponsored family medicine residency program, the Greater Lawrence Family Medicine Residency Program has received national recognition for providing not only superior academic training, but also for the unique cultural experiences the residents gain. Lawrence General Hospital serves as the only teaching hospital in the area hosting residents of the program during their clinical rotations.

Given that more than 50% of the population of Lawrence come from Latino descent, it is vitally important that clinicians practice care in a culturally sensitive manner. Accordingly, program residents are enrolled in an intensive Spanish immersion class and take part in international events and experiences during their training.

Unlike a traditional residency program at a tertiary hospital, residents here are brought into the "family fold," and are embraced by Lawrence General Hospital's physicians and staff. Resident physicians serve as Lawrence families' personal physicians and serve the community both within and outside the hospital during their training years.
