Community Engagement at Lawrence General Hospital

Lawrence General Hospital has always prioritized health equity for our community. For nearly 150 years, the dedicated doctors, nurses, and staff of the hospital have been committed to improving the health of the people and communities it serves. Lawrence General's work is rooted in a spirit of collaboration and its leadership and staff are acutely aware that the hospital cannot achieve that mission on its own. The Hospital collaborates with other health care institutions, community-based organizations, residents, and patients to ensure that it engages the Greater Lawrence community and provides the best care to the patients it serves.

Our clinical and non-clinical staff members alike often volunteer their time and talents across the Merrimack Valley at community events such as bicycle rodeos (giving out free bike helmets sponsored by our Trauma Department) and health fairs. Lawrence General’s Community Engagement Team regularly hosts free blood pressure screenings at various locations (churches, farmers markets, senior centers) to meet patients and locals where they’re at and provide much-needed services.

These screenings provide us with an opportunity to talk to people about cardiac health, risk of stroke and heart attack, and access to primary care. These are very popular events as people love the opportunity to talk with experts about their health.

Starting in summer 2024, our Labor and Delivery Department expanded our community offerings by developing a series of free, bilingual in-person breastfeeding classes. At these monthly classes, our experienced lactation consultants guide moms-to-be through everything they need to know to prepare for breastfeeding their babies.

Trusted. Local. High-quality. Caring. This is Lawrence General, and we are here for our community.

Our Health on Wheels van travels throughout the Merrimack Valley to provide blood pressure screenings to locals, offer health education and connect residents to primary care.

Lawrence General staff members Sam Bergendahl (left) and Charlena Rosario had tons of fun at Lawrence’s Ciclovia 2024 event, handing out 70 bike helmets, along with bicycle safety info and coloring books.

Lawrence General Hospital came together with community members and partners (Lawrence Fire Department, Greater Lawrence Kiwanis Club, Boston Children’s Hospital, MassBike, AAA Northeast, Beams Dreams Bicycle Ministry, SRTS) for the hospital’s first annual Bike Rodeo on our campus in July 2024. Our staff had such fun donating bikes, fitting kids with helmets and taking them through a bike safety obstacle course.
