Level III Trauma Center
Lawrence General was the first Emergency Center in Massachusetts to earn verification as a Level III Trauma Center.
Treatment of trauma is a highly complex process. Our trauma teams are trained to respond to the most challenging cases, time-sensitive surgeries, and critical injuries. Lawrence General has an Orthopedic Traumatologist team, alongside a team of trauma-trained emergency physicians, surgeons and anesthesiologists. Every emergency nurse has certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Trauma Nursing Core Course. Having doctors and nurses who are regularly exposed to the most critical of illnesses and injury, means they are better prepared to care for all our patients.
Lawrence General Hospital is one of the busiest Level III Trauma Centers in Massachusetts, treating an average of 1,200 traumatically injured patients each year.
Emergency physicians, trauma surgeons, anesthesiologists and trauma certified nurses are ready 24/7 to attend to any traumatic injury that comes through the hospital doors.

Injury Prevention
Lawrence General’s Trauma Department coordinates and collaborates with other community agencies in trauma prevention activities throughout the Merrimack Valley. Injury prevention and safety education are an integral part of the Trauma Department’s role in the hospital and the community. A few of the programs sponsored by Lawrence General include:
- Stop the Bleed Education: Stop the Bleed is an educational program sponsored by the American College of Surgeons to educate community members on simple but life-saving first aid for traumatic injuries involving uncontrolled bleeding. The Trauma Department has taught classes in elementary through high schools throughout the Merrimack Valley, community colleges, fire and police departments and various local corporations. If you are interesting in hosting a Stop the Bleed class in your community or place of work call 978-683-4000, Ext. 2075.
- Automobile Safety: The entire Trauma Team is certified by the National Highway and Safety Administration as Child Passenger Safety Technicians which includes safe installing and providing education about the proper use of car seats and their proper installation. Working with Lawrence Fire and Police Departments the Trauma Department sponsors biannual car seat safety check points open to the public. With the assistance of a MA State grant we provide proper sized car seats to qualifying individuals. For more information, call 978-683-4000, Ext. 2075.
- Bicycle Safety: We work with local fire departments, schools, cycling clubs, and AAA of Merrimack Valley to promote bicycle safety for all ages.
