Nurse Recruitment Efforts Yielding Positive Results

Since December, Lawrence General has seen a significant uptick in nurse applications thanks to some new and creative recruitment efforts. During the months of December and January alone, the hospital saw a 63 percent increase in nurse hires and a 43 percent increase in applications over the same time period last year—an impressive accomplishment in an increasingly competitive health care job market.

“In addition to our standard recruitment practices, we have also collaborated with the Marketing team to do some targeted outreach to more than 1,600 former nurse applicants, hosted a networking event which drew 17 qualified candidates, and created a mini social media campaign using video testimonials from our current nurses,” says Arlene Tarantino, senior director of Human Resources. “The response has been very positive and we’ve hired 18 new nurses since December.”

In the fall, the hospital also introduced a new bonus of up to $5,000 for employees who refer an experienced nurse who gets hired, and a recruitment/retention bonus of up to $10,000 (pro rated) for new night shift nurses hired to work 24-hours or more in the Emergency Center.

“It’s a very tight job market right now for experienced nurses,” explains Arlene. “When I talk to my colleagues at other hospitals in the region, I hear over and over again that they’re looking for experienced nurses, especially for the evening and night shifts in the Emergency and Telemetry units—the same areas we are targeting for recruitment.”

For many job seekers, what differentiates Lawrence General from other hospitals in the area is its growing reputation as a dynamic regional medical center that promotes mutual respect, professional growth, and access to the most current technologies and clinical advancements in patient care. The hospital’s new surgical center and recently upgraded medical/surgical, telemetry, and critical care units are also a big selling point.
