“Meditech Central” Opens As Training and Testing Ramp Up

The Kurth Auditorium has been transformed into a high-tech, multipurpose command center that will be bustling with activity over the next few months as the Meditech implementation effort enters the testing and training phase. Temporarily renamed “Meditech Central,” the auditorium has been divided into two classrooms, one of which can seat 40-plus participants. The space will be well used between now and several weeks after the May 1 go-live for the new health information system.

“Our training and testing efforts are moving ahead full steam,” says Maureen Hamel, RN, director of Clinical Information systems. “More than 125 staff members representing different units and departments across the hospital were trained as super users in early January and we then moved right into testing.”

Integrated testing, which examines actual patients as they move through the hospital, began in late-January and will continue through mid-February. The goal of this testing is to ensure that the new system is built to support all current workflows and processes—from registration through billing—while capturing all necessary clinical and financial data. “Integrated testing gives us our first close, end-to-end look at the new system and alerts us to any potential issues that we may need to address before go-live,” says Maureen.

Later in February, the Meditech implementation team will perform what’s called a “parallel run,” which entails actual patient information being entered into both the existing Paragon system and the new Meditech platform. “This gives us another opportunity to fully test the new system and make sure all previously identified issues have been resolved. In March, classroom training will begin for all staff who will be using the new Meditech system.
