Clinical Staff Get a Closer Look at New Electronic Health Record

In May, more than 80 clinical staff members got a firsthand look at what the new Meditech electronic health record will look like in action. Through a live demonstration held in the Kurth Auditorium, a team from Meditech followed a virtual patient as they progressed through the hospital, showcasing all of the different applications used along the way.

“This was really the first time most people had a chance to see what the new system looks like,” says Maureen Hamel, RN, director of Clinical Information Systems. “From nursing and physician documentation, to order management, and medication administration, right up to discharge.”

This one-day presentation was followed by two days of breakout sessions during which staff in different departments discussed the new system in greater detail and had the opportunity to ask questions about functionality. Meditech conducted a similar site visit in April to analyze Lawrence General’s current clinical systems and workflows. Together, these two site visits are an important part of the planning process, informing decisions that will be made in the design and build phase beginning this summer.

“In general, I think people are excited by what the new platform has to offer,” says Maureen. “It’s a robust system that enables physicians and nurses to see the same patient record no matter where they are in the hospital, which isn’t the case now. This alone is a huge improvement in terms of care coordination, patient safety, efficiency, and overall workflow.”

For Maureen, one of the most gratifying aspects of the recent site visit was when staff members came to realize that the various workarounds they now employ to get information out of the Paragon system will disappear with Meditech. “It was great hearing staff say ‘wow, look what it can do!’ and have an ‘ah-ha’ moment about how they will do their work in the future.”

The new Meditech electronic health record will go live in May 2019.
